Before I begin, let me stress this right here and now: No, you cannot call me Sybil and No, I do not suffer from Schizophrenia (which is a very, very real mental illness. I am in no way mocking this and my heart truly goes out to those who wither suffer from it or have a close, loved one who does).
Now that we’ve got that cleared up, what in the hell do you mean then, Free?
Let me explain.
When I was younger, I remember sharing a secret with a former boyfriend that “I can hear…voices. They tell me things. Am I crazy?”
I openly shared it with him because his father was my pastor at the time, so I figured why not share it with him. If I was crazy, then maybe his father could have done an exorcism on me. (Ha!)
But he didn’t react like I thought he would. He simply told me that it was okay and as long as the “voices” didn’t tell me to do anything bad, then it was all to the good.
Hmmmm…that made me feel a wee bit better about myself.
See, we all have voices in our heads. We have the voice of our parents telling us that “you shouldn’t do this. You shouldn’t do that. Stand up straight and be nice.”
We have the voices of media telling us that we need to “look like her, dress like him, dance like Beyoncé or you’re fired!”
No wonder why many of us feel as if we are losing our damn minds!
Then, there’s this one voice! Oh, it can be creepy and downright rude. It’s the voice that tells you that you will never make it.
It can say things like, “you need to lose 100 lbs. before you can ever think about approaching that hot guy.”
“You are not good enough!”
“You’re not pretty enough!”
“You’re too loud and people can’t stand your ass anyway!”
Just. Damn. Rude!!
Do you recognize this voice? It may not say those exact things to you, but I can guarantee that it says some pretty nasty stuff that makes you cry, doubt yourself, become insecure within your skin. It’s sickening.
Here’s a little trick, whenever that voice jumps in, interrupting the lovely conversation between you and your heart, you simply tell that voice to…
“Shut. The. Fuck UP!!!”
Will it work the first time? I don’t know. Most of those voices are pretty damn tough and can take a punch or two before it admits defeat; which is why you must keep learning how to take it down faster.
Begin to speak lovely and pure thoughts about yourself to yourself. Incantations are the key here. If your voice tells you a lie, counter-attack with a truth. But you have to find out the truth about yourself first so that your counter-attack has POWER behind it, or else it won’t work.
Take control of your life and your power by first controlling the voices in your head.
(Make sure to learn sign language, because some of those voices can be deaf…or at least one of mine is *wink*)
